The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Student Scholarship Programs

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has been helping kids go to college for 70 years. The galvanizing principle that the mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in has remained at the heart of the UNCF ideal.

The investors of the UNCF are being consistently given the updates of the scholarship awards as social return. With the $5,000 UNCF scholarship given to an African American freshman, the likelihood of the child to graduate increases to nearly 99%.

The college grads earn more, live better lives, and contribute more to the communities. UNCF manages various scholarship programs and each program has its own eligibility criteria, open/close dates and required documentation.

Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has raised more than $3.6 billion, with almost $1.9 billion generated in the last decade alone. Your investment helps sustain and feed this incredible fund-raising momentum.

After nearly 70 years, UNCF has evolved into the largest private scholarship provider to minority group members in the country. UNCF currently awards more than $100 million a year in scholarships to more than 10,000 students at more than 900 schools across the country, including our prestigious network of 38 member hbcus.

The UNCF manages various scholarship programs. It is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education. Since its founding in 1944, UNCF has raised more than $3.6 billion to help students receive college degrees at the UNCF member institutions and with UNCF scholarships. It has pointed the way to solutions by improving lives through education

  • Awarding 10,000 scholarships and internships under 400 programs for students from low- and moderate-income families to attend more than 900 colleges and universities across the country;
  • Providing financial support for its 37 member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) for scholarships and capacity building;
  • Advocating nationally for the importance of education and college readiness through its annual television program, a national public service announcement campaign, and commentary in national media;
  • Advocating locally at events across the country, such as the Governor’s and Mayor’s luncheons, Walk for Education events and Mayor’s Masked Balls.

As many of the UNCF scholarships require that the applicants complete the free application for the Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), you should get an in-depth information about the said program first.

UNCF/MERCK Science Initiative

UNCF and Merck are working together to help the next generation of researchers, innovators and teachers in the biological, chemical and engineering fields. Through its partnership with Merck, UNCF has funded more than 390 research fellowships to increase the exposure of minorities to research fields and to help researchers identify talented professionals who can lend their expertise to scientific and other research endeavors.

UNCF fellows make a real contribution to the collective advancement of humanity through unique discoveries. Exposure to research and development fellowships significantly increase a student or professional’s ability to relate theoretical knowledge with hands-on activity.

It enhances the entire learning atmosphere, as the experience is integrated into curricula or communicated among peers. It gives greater relevance to classroom instruction and ensures that the latest academic theory is transplanted into the research arena.

It also increases the pool of those with doctoral degrees, who can then lend their expertise to classroom instruction. Every year, scholarships and fellowships are awarded through a national competition. Instructions are given for you to click the appropriate links and apply online.

Scholarships and grants are available from many different organizations, including UNCF and through the federal government. Unlike loans, which you will eventually need to pay back, scholarships and grants do not need to be repaid – and unlike work-study programs, they do not require you to hold an on-campus job while in school.

There are two types of scholarship and grants:

  • Need-based financial aid
  • Merit scholarships

Need-based financial aid is awarded strictly based upon your financial need. An essential step in the application process for need-based aid is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Merit scholarships are typically awarded to students based on their academic, athletic or artistic ability. Merit scholarships are also awarded to students who are connected with a particular group or organization such as a church or civic group.

Because many merit scholarships also require applicants to complete FAFSA, we recommend you begin your application process by completing the important first step of filing a FAFSA.
